A firm hand takes your shoulder and ushers you to the high seat of power. The clouds part and you can see a vast dominion. Nothing escapes his attention. One eye sees the surface of all things while the others sees the hidden truths. The normally invisible depths. Crows wheel above him, bringing the messages that he needs to govern his domain. His mind is steel, his words are iron and his judgement is forever. He receives council for good and ill. His years of leadership know the difference.
– Charles Harrington, Murder of Crows Tarot Deck
The Murder of Crows deck is unique in that its card meanings are written to include both the negative and positive sides of the card whether it be upright or not. Generally, when I read with these cards, I will consider both the negative and positive regardless of its position. However, should one become reversed, I interpret its negative meaning a bit more strongly than I do when it is upright. However, because this is a post, incorporating emphasis one way or the other is a bit difficult. If you’d like to explore these cards or get a further reading, you can book a reading here!
What is the Major Arcana?
The Major Arcana is the first 22 cards of a tarot deck( 0-21). These 22 cards represent situations that everyone faces throughout their lives. Each card carries it’s own significance and point of view to help guide you through different parts of your life. The Major Arcana represents major life moments, whereas the Minor Arcana focuses on everyday moments. The Major Arcana shows you when major life pivots occur, when you will achieve certain goals, or if things are about to go majorly awry.
The Emperor – Major Arcana card IV(4)
The Emperor is a card that represents the duality of being a royal leader. He can be the embodiment of a true and mighty King. A servant to his people, a protector of his lands. He is the noble and triumphant. He is the merciful teacher but dutiful judge. This person comes with a good sense of governance, wise advice, and “political” awareness through means of diplomacy and good judgement.
On the flip side, The Emperor can be a greedy tyrant who only looks out for themselves. They come with an authoritarian flavor and ruthlessness.
If your question is asking about someone else or places this card in a position to represent someone, you will need to use your own intuition and personal context clues to decide which one of these leaders represents the person in question. It is also possible that your querent embodies both sides of this coin. There are many factors that go into such a reading. But let me reiterate, it is YOUR intuition and discernment that matters here.
When it comes to what The Emperor advises, this card is telling you to get in touch with your inner royal. Find the pieces of you that exude diplomacy, nobility, and strong leadership. These qualities will assist you in your current topic at hand. This card is suggesting that you have the ability to be the authority. This is an opportunity for you to showcase your leadership skills. This is a sign that you are the person for the job, whatever it may be.
